My name is Jaimen Hudson, I am a born and bred Esperance local. My family started Esperance Diving Academy in 1983. I was born in 1990 so many of my earliest memories are of days out on the water while my folks taught people to dive. When I turned 10 it was my time to become one of those students. I fell in love with the underwater world! Spending my weekends diving with my mum taking photos or with my dad searching for specimen shells as he is a professional shell diver. I also loved skateboarding, surfing and motorbike riding. When I graduated high school at 17 I commenced full time work in the family business. This involved working out on the boat for Esperance Island Cruises & Esperance Diving & Fishing. My goal was to obtain enough sea time to get my Master Class 5 skippers ticket.

This would allow me to drive the vessels.

Unfortunately on the 27th of July 2008 I had an motorcycle accident that rendered me a quadriplegic. All the dreams I had of driving the vessel, obtaining my commercial dive ticket went out the window. I had to rebuild my life completely, now without the use of my legs or hands.

After 6 months in Perth hospital I wanted to get straight back into work. I needed to have a reason to get out of bed everyday. I commenced a roll in the office as opposed to out on the boat. Answering phones calls, booking people onto tours and into the accommodation. I credit working for allowing me to overcome the adversity I was faced with.

I fell even more in love with the business my family had built. Meeting new people everyday and taking them on tours to visit the surrounding islands was a dream job.

Fast forward to 2022 and my wife Jess and I now operate the business together. We have two young children that are being raised in a similar fashion to myself, always outdoors enjoying nature.
